How to use Summa
Summa is a monday.com dashboard widget that rolls up planned vs. actual, budget variance, completion, and at-risk across as many boards as you choose — past the native connected-board limit. Here's how to get it running in a couple of minutes.
Before you start
You'll get the most out of Summa if your boards have a few of these (it works with whatever you have):
- A number column for the planned/estimate value (e.g. Estimated SP, Budget, Estimated hours).
- A number column for the actual/spent value (e.g. Actual SP, Spent, Actual hours) — optional, but needed for variance.
- A status column (for completion %) and a date column (for overdue flags) — both optional.
- At least one board connected to the dashboard.
Summa requests only the boards:read scope — it reads the boards you point it at and never writes to them.
Step by step
-
Install Summa
Add Summa from the monday Marketplace (or via the installation link your admin shares). Once installed, it's available as a widget in every dashboard.
-
Add the widget to a dashboard
Open any monday Dashboard → Add widget → Apps → "Summa: Portfolio Rollup." The widget drops onto the dashboard.
-
Connect your boards
Summa reads the dashboard's connected boards. Use the dashboard's "connected boards" control (top bar) to add the boards you want in the rollup — add as many as you like, beyond the usual dashboard limit.
-
Let it auto-configure
On first load, Summa auto-detects your planned/estimate, actual/spent, status, and date columns by name and type, then renders the rollup immediately — no setup wizard.
-
Fine-tune in Settings (optional)
Click Settings in the widget to choose which boards to include, remap any column (Planned, Actual, Status, Due date), pick how to roll up (by Board, Group, Status, or Initiative), and set the at-risk threshold (% over budget). Click Apply.
Reading the rollup
- Summary cards — Projects, Items, Planned, Actual, Variance, At risk, and Overdue at a glance.
- Planned vs. actual chart — each project's planned vs. actual side by side.
- Project table — a sortable breakdown: Items, % Done, Planned, Actual, Variance, Var %, and Status for every project.
Values can be story points, hours, or dollars — Summa just sums the columns you map, so the same widget works for sprint capacity, effort, or budget.
Tips & troubleshooting
- "Pick your boards to begin" — open Settings and select at least one board, then map your planned column.
- "No items found" — the selected boards returned no items, or the column mapping needs adjusting; open Settings and recheck the Planned/Actual columns.
- Variance looks off — make sure the Planned and Actual columns are both mapped to the right number columns in Settings.
- Big portfolios — Summa aggregates across as many boards as you select; if you hit a large item count it will tell you, so you can narrow the selection for full accuracy.
Trial & billing
Summa includes a 14-day free trial. After the trial it's $19/month, billed through monday — start, manage, or cancel anytime from your monday billing settings.
