Eleven Decembers ago, the morning after a circle of old friends held the fifth of their white-elephant swaps, the chef who brought his plum jam to every one was found at the foot of the cellar stairs. The ruling said he went down alone and fell. Seventeen real-feeling documents and four answers to commit to, graduated hints when you're stuck, and the sealed solution behind a warning page. One evening, about 60 to 90 minutes.

The circle's sixteenth swap, in the same old house, where the woman of the house tastes anything edible the moment it's opened. After dinner there are twenty-two gifts for twenty-one people, and two of them look like the famous jam. Four killers ship in the game, so you host and play a character too, as blind as your guests unless your own sealed card says, when the round starts, that you did it. About three hours, or 90 minutes with the short format, in which every player reads their character and the case file ahead of the night.
